AI grifting assholes are ruining computers

I had a whole thing written and ready to go before realizing it would be better for AppleInsider, so look for that tomorrow. Instead, since I'd like to have something to post today, here's another great story from Aftermath.

Not only is the artificial intelligence grift ruining people's ability to think critically (more than it already was thanks to social media and Google search), it's ruining people's hobbies. This is yet another reason why we can't have nice things.

It seemed likely that the new AI hype cycle would get destructive, but I never expected it to get this bad. The entire industry is racing toward implosion and seemingly for no good reason beyond financial gain.

The rabid adherents of AI – not those who feel compelled to use it for work, but the ones who won’t shut the fuck up about it – are too blinkered, greedy, or ignorant to see the writing on the wall. They do not love computers; maybe they never did. They love money and having a mistake-prone LLM do their work for them.

A lot of this technology, in its more useful and grounded forms, would have evolved naturally. However, whatever this AI bubble is, it's unnatural and it is waiting to pop. When that happens, it's going to get really weird.
