Apple should let the iPhone Fold die

Apple should let the iPhone Fold die
iPhone Fold isn't a practical product and doesn't solve any real problems

I wrote a story for AppleInsider covering the latest details of the iPhone Fold rumors, potential delays, and the problems presented by such a device. While I did say that Apple shouldn't bother with releasing it, I hedged towards Apple's desire for a release.

There is no doubt in my mind that Apple is fully committed to releasing the iPhone Fold at this point. While when is still somewhat in question, I believe going forward with a release is a mistake.

I won't rehash all of the details of my report here, but the basic premise is that the iPhone Fold doesn't solve anything. It's an awkward mesh of phone and tablet that isn't good at being either.

At least, that's what the foldable market has been so far. Apple could always surprise us with some idea or concept we haven't conceived of to make the iPhone Fold a must-have. All of its competitors will immediately rush out to copy that detail and we're back to the races.

The concern is that Apple won't be able to hit that September/October release window. And I don't believe December/January would be a good idea, nor would it play well to its overall strategy.

So, if it can't release in 2026, I expect it'll get pushed back all the way to 2027. However, in doing so, the foldable market will likely begin imploding on itself and extended reality products will begin going more mainstream.

The need for the iPhone Fold in 2026 is already low enough, but in 2027 it's non-existent.

So, while I'm sure that Apple will do everything in its power to ensure the iPhone Fold does launch, some part of me hopes that it fails. This is the one product that doesn't need to launch. I feel like it's a distraction.

Apply the usual disclaimers here. If and when the iPhone Fold is announced in September, I'm sure I'll still find it all very interesting. Though, unless that camera system is hiding something, I don't think I can be swayed from the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Whatever happens, this is going to be an interesting cycle for fans, developers, and the industry.
