Cook's political actions will forever color his legacy

Cook's political actions will forever color his legacy
A dumb trophy was all it took to give Apple some distance from the insanity

I've seen a lot of terrible hot takes in the 24 hours since Tim Cook announced his transition to board chairman. Many are centered around his proximity to the Trump administration.

I'll be among the first to point out how gross it has all become. A corrupt administration demanding devotion and gifts or else face unprecedented consequences is nothing short of a nightmare.

However, instead of instantly turning Apple into the new face of fascism, Cook orchestrated a situation where Apple changed almost nothing. The rest of the industry got rid of moderation tools, enabled the return of hate speech, and asked the workforce to "man up."

The problem is what it took to ensure that could happen. Cook had to concede some pride publicly while shuffling some finances privately all while making Trump feel like he was in control.

I won't deny that there's something to the idea that Apple's corporate greed makes it side with whoever is in power to ensure it gets the results it wants. Deals made under the Biden administration reflect that.

However, I look at that as the price of doing business in this capitalistic world. Let us not be naive here and pretend that Apple is anything but a cold corporate entity. Though, it does have good people inside that make good decisions too.

Apple could have put the force of its financial weight and political power behind battling the corrupt administration. It would have been quite the grand gesture, but the result would have been catastrophic for the company.

I have no doubt Apple wouldn't be Apple anymore simply because the cruelty Trump's administration is willing to show goes far beyond whatever legal process Apple might try to utilize.

So, instead of worrying about what could have been, let's look at the results. Trump gained one cheap plaque and some publicity while Apple saved itself and its customers countless billions in illegal tariffs. Also, the company still celebrates Pride month, utilizes DEI in its hiring, and leans into progressive opportunity and investment.

Cook may have had to take a public black eye to make it happen, but that's what made him the CEO Apple needed at the time. Now I'm just curious about what Ternus might do with the remaining two years of Trump.

The good news is that Cook and his team have made it clear that Cook will continue to be the face of political interactions for Apple. That's a win for Apple and a pretend victory for Trump.

Everyone is always talking about four-dimensional chess and who is playing it. I think, in this case, Apple has made quite the masterful gambit.

Sadly, the folks that can't look past the headlines and understand the nuance of the situation will likely be the ones that write the history. Cook's actions were meant to fool the dullard into thinking he was subservient, but it also fooled many of the folks these actions are supposed to serve.

I suppose that's just the world we live in.
