RIP Edgar the cat

CW: pet loss. We lost Edgar April 13 after he struggled with a developing tumor. He was in our family for 5 years.

RIP Edgar the cat
Edgar was an amazing cat that only ever wanted all the pets and food you could provide

I do apologize for sharing such difficult news via a blog post on a website that has otherwise been about tech and video games. Though, this is also my space to do with what I like, and my cats have cut out their own little corner here.

Readers might have noticed that I include a photo of my cats in every newsletter/Friday post. Edgar has been included many a time being his oversized self.

When I first met my wife, Natalie, in 2020, it wasn't long before I was introduced to her family cat that she had claimed for herself. Shortly after, it died of old age.

Of course, Natalie was upset at this loss. She was staying at home in between college and finding somewhere to go, and her sister convinced her to go look at some cats. Needless to say, she met Edgar, already about 2 years old and a giant chunk, and fell in love.

It wasn't long after that when she moved in with me, Edgar in tow. I had Harvie, my then 5-year-old cat, but that was it. She had lived with other pets before, so it didn't take long for her to tolerate Edgar's presence.

Harvie definitely had opinions

Edgar was easy to please, and he warmed up to me quickly. When I'd spend time on the couch, he'd climb into my lap, sometimes grabbing at my arm to ask for pets.

His favorite thing to do was to headbutt someone to get their attention.

When we had Suzanna, a little yellow mutt that passed due to a genetic disease at only two years old, Edgar was her best friend. They'd often snuggle together.

Agatha joined us not long after we got Suzanna, and that made quite the full household. Our stay at that home would have felt alien without Edgar or Harvie, as they basically arrived with the furniture.

After Suzanna passed, a kitten wandered in and decided to live with us, and that's how we arrived at four cats. Marble is quite possibly a kind of squirrel, but we kept her anyway.

She may have only been weeks old at the time, but she quickly grew close to Edgar. She would play with his tail as he draped it over the side of the table.

Agatha and Edgar would often be found cuddling in the laundry basket together.

We got quite lucky with our selection of animals. Everyone got along and was fairly well-behaved. After five years in that house, they were what really made it feel like home.

Early in 2026, we purchased our new home. Edgar was already showing signs of being sick, but at the time, the symptoms appeared to be sinus-related. He got to join us in our new home, but he was never able to truly settle in.

A trip to the vet revealed what could be an inner ear infection. A week of medicine helped restore his energy, and he even regained some weight. But then suddenly, he took a bad turn.

They told us the only other thing it could be was a tumor. There was no medicine that could help Edgar at this point. And as rough as he had become in the previous 24 hours, there wasn't much that would help him.

In the end, we made the impossible choice. Goodbye, Edgar. We'll miss you, big guy.
